Konye and Colvin selected for Universiade'09 squad

Matt Gutsch, U of A Athletics Communications

(June 22, 2009) John Konye and Brett Colvin of the University of Alberta Golden Bears soccer team, have been named to the squad that will represent Canada at the upcoming 25th Summer Universiade in Serbia, July 1-12, 2009.

Konye, a 5’7” Edmonton native, had a very distinguished and successful career with the Golden Bears, winning one CIS championship (2006), as well as being named the Canada West Rookie of the Year in 2004. In five years with the Bears, the forward/midfield player, notched 21 goals which puts him second all-time in Golden Bears history. His best season was 2006-07, when Alberta won the national championship on home turf, when he recorded six goals, four assists and a conference leading four game winning goals in Canada West 13 games. The two-time Canada West all-star assumed the captain’s role in his final season (2008-09), and also adopted a more defensive-minded midfielder role, helping the Bears to the post-season and a fourth place finish in the playoffs.

In Colvin's short time with the Bears, he has quickly established himself as a deadly striker within the Canada West. During his rookie campaign, 2007-08, the Calgary native led the Alberta in points with four goals and five assists in 14 conference games, which had him tied for fourth in the Canada West standings. In his sophomore season Colvin led the conference in points (13) and finished tied for first in goals with nine. Those tallies were good enough to see him named to the Canada West First Team All-Star squad and a CIS Second Team All-Canadian.

Former Golden Bear soccer player earns first cap for Canada

Former University of Alberta Golden Bear's rookie of the year (2006-07), Eddy Sidra earned his first international cap during Team Canada's 1-0 win over Cyprus on May 30.  The match was Sidra's debut for Canada's national men's team, and at 20 years of age, Sidra became Canada's youngest starter in nearly four years.

After a stellar freshman campaign with the Golden Bears, the fleet footed Sidra traveled to Germany for the next step in his career after being contacted by FC Energie Cottbus in the German U-19 Bundesliga.

The 5'7' Sidra helped the Bears win their fourth National title in 2006-07 when they defeated Trinity Western University 1-0 at Foote Field in Edmonton, and scored two goals and four points while playing all 14 games during the 2006-07 Canada West regular season, while notching one assist in five Canada West and CIS play-off games.

The speedy and versatile Sidra can play midfield or defence, and was a member of the Alberta provincial teams from 2002-05.  He was also a member of the National youth team from 2004-05 and the Edmonton Juventus youth club system before joining Len Vickery's Golden Bears for the 2006-07 season.
