Canada wins the most prestigious trophy at Danone Nations Cup 2004 in France (Nov 9, 2004) - Canada wins the most prestigious trophy at Danone Nations Cup 2004 in FranceMontreal, October 27th 2004 ---- After only 5 years, the Danone Nations Cup has become a huge success, in which more than 8 million children have taken part since it was established. Once again, the wave of the Danone Nations Cup has swept over 32 countries, sweeping up millions of keen young “footballers” in its wake, and in 2004 more than ever, this event has became the key sporting fixture in the young soccer players’ calendar. This great and prestigious event, which is supported by Zinedine Zidane culminated in the World Final at Parc des Princes on September 5th 2004! A few weeks ago, 32 great soccer nations competed in a fun atmosphere in front of a 30,000-strong crowd of spectators at Parc des Princes – including 14 Canadian ambassadors that finally lived their most cherished dream… For their fourth participation, Team Danone Canada offered an impressive soccer demonstration, considering the unique training camp that brought together players from British Colombia, Ontario and Quebec before the big final in Paris. Head coach Danny Stewart's team ranked 19th out of 32 countries, but they really did lose 1 game in the regular time period. Besides not only did Canada beat soccer titans as Italy on the field but they did it with attitude; earning thereafter the most prestigious trophy of the competition: The FairPlay Cup, awarded by the Real Madrid star Zinedine Zidane himself. Our Canadian squad demonstrated impeccable vivacity and technique all along the tournament, proving internationally the growing essence of soccer in North America. Challenging Germany, Italy and Russia, Katie Turney, one of the B.C. player forming the team, even got a chance to play an exhibition game with European professional soccer players while the 12 others boys and Marie-Christine Gauthier our second female player, did all have the opportunity to meet Zidane. The Danone Nations Cup has been celebrated in a remarkable climate of dynamism and festivity, giving the sites of Plessis Robinson and Parc des Princes a magical spirit. This even also promoted pedagogical, cultural and social objectives. The tournament successfully reunited various cultures, different nations and many winning ingredients to realize the principal goal; the one to teach the entire world, “to believe in your dreams”. Already “en route”, the 2005 selection camps will convey to another Danone Canada team to perpetuate the tradition and to realize the dream of thousands of other kids.
