(Nov 14, 2006) - (November 12, 2006) EDMONTON (CIS) –The hometown University of Alberta Golden Bears (9-0-5 Canada West, 12-2-5 overall) are CIS National Champions in Men’s Soccer for the second time in four years courtesy of a hard-fought tactical 1-0 victory over emerging soccer power the Trinity Western University Spartans in the National Championship Final played Sunday afternoon in Edmonton at Foote Field.
Hilaire Kamdem (Edmonton, 5th) scored the lone goal of the match in the 72nd minute off of a free-kick as he struck a hard curling shot from 35 yards out that Spartans ‘keeper Tyler DeJong (Abbotsford, B.C., 1st) could not hold onto as the Bears avenged a 2-nil loss to Trinity in the Conference Final Four a week ago.
“We have a real rivalry with Trinity, and after we lost to them in the Canada West, we wanted another crack at them and fortunately we got that chance and got the result we were looking for,” said Kamdem, The Player of the Match following the game

The two teams went through a feeling out process in the first half that saw limited opportunities for either squad.
In the 30th minute after an assertive Alberta build-up led by Junior Castrillon-Rendon (Calgary, 2nd) a 2006 CIS First-Team All-Canadian, the Bears Alexander Campos (Calgary, 3rd) got a break down the left flank but missed the net on a shot from 18 yards out.
Trinity’s best chance in the first half came in the 43rd minute off of a corner as Tournament MVP Justin Farenik (Calgary, 2nd) just deflected a header wide of the Alberta goal.
The Spartans almost broke the scoreless draw in the 64th minute as Patrick Kelly (Cochrane, AB, 3rd) was left unmarked at the back of the crease but his header just missed the mark.
After Kamdem’s strike in the 72nd minute, the Spartans pressed forward and second-team team CIS All-Canadian Nick Perugini nearly tied the game in the 87th minute off of a free kick, but Alberta goalkeeper Daniel Gusberti (Edmonton, 3rd) was equal to the task.
The Spartans had two more corners in extra-time but to the delight of the 837 fans who braved frigid -7 conditions in Edmonton, Alberta would hold off Trinity for the victory.
“You would love to score early and then add a second and a third but we knew coming in it was going to be a tough match and not that type of game,” said 2006 CIS Coach of the Year Len Vickery of the Golden Bears
“It was great battle, between two great teams. The first 45 minutes was like a chess match, and in the second half you knew it was going to come down to one play, and unfortunately Alberta got that play,” said Spartans Head Coach Al Alderson who has guided his program to back-to-back Canada West titles.
“Since coming into the Canada West (2001) Trinity has been a tremendous program, and with UBC and Victoria in our Conference winning their fair share of National titles as well, you have to make the most of your opportunities,” said Vickery.
Canada West schools have now claimed the last four CIS Men’s Soccer titles, with Alberta winning in 2003, Victoria in 2004, and UBC in 2005.
